Who Should Have a Writing Coach?
Any writer, novice or professional, committed to their personal artistic growth who desires to produce writing with increased quality and/or production can profit from the guidance of an experienced writing coach.
Just as athletes need special attention to first recognize and develop innate gifts, then maintain progress throughout their careers, writers benefit from personalized direction to their artistic growth from knowledgeable focus on their unique background, stumbling blocks, and ever-changing goals. Often how-to books and classes are limited to basic instruction without getting to the heart and soul of the growing writer.
I know how to identify and nurture the development of your creative talent allowing you freedom and joy in the writing process to produce works for personal growth and expression to an audience.
What will you do as my Writing Coach?
As your coach, I provide one-on-one instruction directly guiding you through your specific challenges while enhancing positive attributes you already possess.
Through my experience and recognized intuition, I will guide you to honor your creative gift and find joy in the writing process. I will encourage the growth of your knowledge and skill, as well as the discovery and expression of your soulful inspiration and unique writer’s voice. Whether your goal is to produce your work for sharing or for your own enjoyment, through our process together you can expect to experience a safer, more powerful place of creative inspiration and execution. You will learn how to receive feedback without allowing damage to your writer’s self-esteem and move forward with edits, then into new works.
What's the benefit of attending your workshops vs. personal coaching?
I give 100% to every writer through any modality of my teaching.
While workshops offer unique learning opportunities within community, my attention is divided to balance benefits for everyone. With personal coaching, you have my singular focus on your goals, project and specific needs.
Can you teach a class in my area?
Yes, I’m available to travel or can generate a webinar for your group. Let’s discuss the possibilities.
What's the difference between face-to-face and phone coaching?
Energy and ideas are exchanged in both. At this time, telephonic coaching simply means you can’t see me during our session, but this medium allows me flexibility to work with varied schedules, as well as with writers anywhere in the world. Skype bridges personal meetings and phone coaching.
Using an individual method or some combination, I have successfully coached writers in every corner of the U.S., as well as in Europe.
What genres do you work with?
The finished products of writing genres may look different in structure, but all have one thing in common – to succeed they must tell a good story that connects to the hearts and minds of the audience.
My personal study and success, as well as client focus, is on fiction, nonfiction, or some special blend -- memoir, inspirational/self-help, novel, short story; stage play, musical, or screenplay; academic writing for professional journals, essays and dissertations; as well as magazine/newsletter feature, marketing, promotional, and instructional materials.
How can you help me through writer's block?
Most writers have experienced a time when they wanted to write, but couldn’t; I have, too. Through intuitive listening and compassionate discussion, I create the best tactic from a number of proven methods to ease you safely back into writing. Through this engagement, the block lifts, ideas emerge, and the words flow.
When will I finish my work?
Along with coaching you in writing, revision and editing, I am also your coach and cheerleader for sustained perseverance and determination. We will define realistic goals, as well as evaluate them as you progress. Whatever your life’s circumstances, I am committed to the planning, execution, and encouragement for you to succeed at your goals.
Who are your clients?
My clients range in age from 12-82 and vary in cultural, economic and educational backgrounds. Whether these unique individuals yearn to write for themselves, their families, their businesses or the public, they share one thing in common – the desire to grow as a writer and express in writing.
What have your clients achieved?
In short, what their heart, mind and soul have yearned to express, often in delightfully surprising ways. Many of my clients have been published in a variety of genres and media. An equal number of clients have reported improved personal satisfaction with their writing.
Students have successfully applied to their first choice schools and internships; others have enhanced their skills and comfort level for classroom projects.
Please refer to the Home page for examples, as well as the Clients page for testimonials.
Can you help me get published?
I will assist you in writing and refining query letters and book proposals, as well as searching for reputable agents or self-publishers while also giving you advice once you get their interest.
I can also edit and polish your manuscript, then lead you through focus groups prior to querying.
If you choose to self-publish, I am an experienced project manager. Alongside my skills, I work with interior and cover designers, photographers, and web designers to guide the project into publication and you to sales.
Why are fees charged on an hourly basis?
My writer’s coaching is your fast lane on a direct route to success.
My fees are in alignment with other personal coaching fees, such as life or career coaching. Personal work may initially seem more costly, but like all one-on-one processes, working with a professional coach brings quicker insights and the heightened possibility of faster growth. The fees, our time together, and the guidance you receive for the interim are all investments for your writing, as well as your personal growth and happiness.
Why don't you charge by the page like many other editors?
Unlike editors who generally charge a set fee per page, I suggest a plan of action based on your shared goals, and then we reach agreement on next steps. I provide creative instructions, content building suggestions, structural strengthening, as well as line editing for publication. Often with my services, like those of other editors, more than one pass per project is necessary. Therefore, my fees are based on an hourly rate for fairness to me and you. For example, if your work is near publication-ready, my charged time is less than for those with writing which needs more attention.
If you have additional questions, I’m happy to share my thoughts.
